The options were given to parents on doing the surgery removal of a supernumerary tooth under local anaesthesia, or sedation . We decided to proceed with sedation for the best comfort as the kid will wake up with the impacted tooth gone and wont remember anything about the procedure !
For this particular case , the boy has an impacted tooth ( tooth that is stuck within the bone , usually is due to lack of space for its’ eruption) on his upper right canine region. The reason to remove it was so that the boy can proceed with his Invisalign treatment without any interference when comes to teeth movement.
The whole procedure took about an hour including the sedation time . Parents were a little worried initially , as the boy was struggling ( a normal sign as they try to resist falling asleep ) , we started the procedure after about 5 minutes , thats how long it took for the anaesthesia to work . However , the boy remained drowsy in after the procedure and rested in our clinic for about 2 hours before leaving the clinic . The anesthesiologist stayed back and make sure the boy is fully awake before discharging him . We do have a very comfortable recovery room for our patients to rest , and also for the family members to wait.
We are glad that more and more parents are aware the importance of oral care for special needs children . We hope this article will help parents understand how complicated oral surgeries can be carried out even with special needs children.
